This service provides scanning and delivery of PDF files over the Internet for the library’s holdings (some materials are excluded), within the scope of purposes and quantities prescribed by the Copyright Act.
Before you use this service, please review and agree to the University of Tsukuba Library Scan & PDF Delivery Service Terms of Use .
This is a paid service. All costs, including "the amount corresponding to the compensation" and the fee for photocopy, must be fully covered by the user.
Additionally, since we need to check if the material is eligible and calculate the amount corresponding to the compensation, it may take about one week from application to delivery.

- Materials:
Paper materials and microform materials held by the Central Library. However, the following “materials excluded from the service” are not included.- Materials designated as excluded by the Society for Administration of Remuneration for Public Transmission by Libraries or Similar Facilities (SARLIB)
- Published sheet music, maps, photo books, and art collections
- Journal articles published within a year
- Rare Books
- Semi-rare Books
- Japanese style books
- Materials with significant deterioration or damage
- Other materials excluded from service, as determined by the University Librarian.
- Scanning materials:
- Under the Copyright Act, you can only copy a part of a work. In general, this means no more than half of the entire work.
For some exceptional materials, the rules for copying and providing follow "the guidelines for Reproduction and Public Transmission by Libraries or Similar Facilities." - We provide copies as PDF files. We will choose the scanning method based on the size and type of the material. Color pages are generally copied in color.
- Basically, we digitize the library material at approximately 200-300 dpi in resolution.
- To prevent unauthorized distribution, your User ID will be inserted in the header and '筑波大学附属図書館' along with the data creation date in the footer of every page.
- We will not, in principle, recreate transmitted files that are considered satisfactory for use.
- Under the Copyright Act, you can only copy a part of a work. In general, this means no more than half of the entire work.
- Fee:
- The service fee comprise the copying cost of 50 yen per page (inclusive of tax, the same rate for both monochrome and color) plus the amount corresponding to the compensation.
- This service is subject to the Rules on Remuneration for Public Transmission by Libraries or Similar Facilities, which require us to pay compensation to copyright holders. This amount will be included in your total payment.
The determination of necessity for "the amount corresponding to the compensation" will be made in accordance with "the guidelines for Reproduction and Public Transmission by Libraries or Similar Facilities."

※The base price and the total number of pages are defined according to the database provided by SARLIB.
※The amount corresponding to the compensation is calculated per single page, while the fee for photocopy is, in principle, calculated as one sheet for a two-page spread.
- Payment:
- Payment by credit card is required in advance.
- The deadline of payment is within 5 days from the notification email.
- In principle, this service is at the user's own expense, for both students and faculty. For those who wish to use university expense, please refer to "e-DDS by Univ. Expense." It is a campus-only service.
- (Scheduled from April) UTMy faculty can also use university expense with this service.
From application to delivery
- Before applying, please confirm the University of Tsukuba Library Scan & PDF Delivery Service Terms of Use .
- Who agree to the Terms of Use may apply for the online "Scan & PDF Delivery Service."
- Please log in and apply using the "Scan & PDF Delivery (Paid Service)" link displayed on the OPAC details page.
After applying, we may contact you regarding the application details, duplication, or fees.
Due to the system's design, the application button may sometimes appear even for materials that are ineligible for this service.
If the requested materials are not in the Central Library’s collection, your application will be canceled. - A notification including the total fee will be sent to your registered e-mail address when the PDF file is ready.
- Please make your payment by credit card. A link to the payment page will be displayed in the "★Message" section of My Library.
- After we confirm your payment, we will send you an email with a link to download the PDF within 2 to 3 days.
Precautions for use
- We will contact you at the email address registered in My Library. If you do not have a university email address (@u, @un) or wish to receive emails at a different address, please log in to My Library promptly and add or register a contactable email address from "Change Email Address" in the "Personal Settings" section. Emails will be sent to both your university address (if applicable) and any added or registered addresses.
- If you have any questions about the fee, please contact the library before payment. By completing your payment, we consider you agree to the amount charged. Please note that fees are non-refundable once paid.
- Please download the file within 2 weeks from the notification email. The file will be deleted after the download period has expired.
- This service is provided based on the provisions of the Japanese Copyright Act. When you use it from outside Japan, please observe local laws and regulations. Even when permitted by local laws, ensure that your actions do not harm copyright holders’ rights.
Prohibited Actions
The following actions are prohibited in connection with the use of the service.
- Allowing third parties to use the service.
- Providing or distributing transmitted files without the copyright holder’s permission. Examples include:
a) Sending files (including those obtained by screenshots, etc.) by email or similar means.
b) Uploading files (including those obtained by screenshots, etc.) to websites on the Internet, including posting on social media.
Notes on credit card payment
- Refrain from entering your card information on a computer used by the public.
- Refrain from entering your card information over inadequately secure Wi-Fi.
- Receipts cannot be issued by the credit card payment.
FAQ on credit card payment
Q1) Which credit cards are accepted?
A1) VISA, MasterCard, AMEX, DINERS, and JCB are accepted.
Q2) Is there a payment fee?
A2) There is no payment fee.
Q3) Do you register my card information at the university?
A3) We use a secure external system to manage the card entry and payments. Staffs cannot see the card information.
Q4) I couldn't pay by the due date.
A4) We will set a different URL for the payment on My Library and inform you of that. Please pay within the deadline. The request cannot be canceled.
Q5) Can I choose a payment method such as an installment payment?
A5) No, you can't. One payment only.
