Collection of British Legal History

Consists of 353 materials of compilations of statutes and leading cases, and research publications of the United Kingdom since the 15th century. This collection can be divided in two parts: the one is a compilation of enacted laws of England; and the other is Scottish statutes, leading cases, encyclopedias, and learned books. The legislation of England belongs to the Anglo-American law system, and the legislation of Scotland belongs to the Continental law system. This collection is valuable for individual studies on the legislation systems of England and Scotland, and also for their comparative study. Received in fiscal year 1991.

Uno Library

A collection of approximately 1,400 items documents and archived books of Uno Kozo, an economic theorist known throughout the world for the Uno Theory of Marxist economics. The collection includes valuable documents related to economics, as well as manuscripts, unpublished lecture notes, memos, and books with handwritten margin notes. It is invaluable material for understanding the thought process and circumstances of the development of the Uno Theory. Received in February 1997.
In October 2022, 34 items from Uno's former collection and his works were added to the collection, donated by Sakurai Tsuyoshi, Professor Emeritus of Musashi University.

Irish University Press Series of British Parliamentary Papers

A collection of 1,000 volumes of reference material, depositions, and research reports used in the legislative process by the Royal Commission, a special committee established in British Parliament in the 19th century. Received in fiscal year 1979.

Okakura Library

A collection assembled from the previous collection of 2,417 books by Tokyo Higher Normal School Professor Okakura Yoshisaburo (English linguistics and literature). Received in September 1940.Professor Okakura’s older brother Okakura Tenshin, was a pioneer in the art world. The Okakura Collection includes many difficult to obtain books covering many fields, such as English, Latin, and Korean languages and British literature. Of particular value are the dictionaries and study materials in English, German, French and Dutch from the end of the Tokugawa period to the beginning of the Meiji era.

Ototake Library

A collection assembled from the previous collection of 1,457 books by Tokyo University of Literature and Science Professor Ototake Iwazo (education). Received in February 1955. This collection consists of materials acquired as references by Professor Ototake Iwazo for his work日本庶民教育史/Nihon Shomin Kyoikushi, and includes materials related to the history of education and texts for girls, mainly in the form of oraimono (textbooks written in the style of a correspondence). In May 1955 Professor Karasawa Tomitaro published the乙竹文庫目録/Ototake Bunko Mokuroku as a catalog of this collection.

Kitano Shrine Archive

A collection of 470 documents and records related to the Kitano Shrine of Kyoto. Most of the items are from the former collection of Shobaiin, formerly affiliated with the Kitano Shrine. There are many important historical materials regarding medieval culture and history, as well as socioeconomic history, such as shakenikki (diaries of the shrine operations) and rengakaishi (writing sheets of renga, a form of poetry).

Sammlung ueber Recht des Nationalsozialismus (National socialist law 1933-1945)

A collection of books and pamphlets on the theory of National Socialism. Includes the writings of many prominent scholars of German law, like Carl Schmitt, a proponent of a totalitarian view of the state and politics who established the foundations of Nazi doctrines, and Ernst Forsthoff, covering a wide range of areas, such as law philosophy, criminal law, constitutional law, civil codes, commercial law, and copyright law. There are also works by Otto Ender, the author of the constitution of Austria, Wenzeslaus Graf Gleispach, contributor to the revision of criminal law, Hans Fehr, historian of Swiss law, politicians like Adolf Hitler and Hermann Goring, as well as other authors, like Wilhelm Ropke and Werner Sombart on economics and sociology. 433 books, received in fiscal year 1983.

Comenius Library

A collection consists of 236 items concerning Czech educator Johann Amos Comenius (1592-1670). Donated by Professor Umene Satoru, on the occasion of his retirement from the Tokyo University of Education. Included both the materials: those which Professor Umene had accumulated personally since his school days, and also those which he had purchased at public charge as a Professor of the University. Donation accepted June 1967. As a collection on Comenius, one of the most distinguished ones in the world.

Stein Collection (Bibliothek Ludwig und Arthur Stein)

Consists of the former private library of the German philosopher Ludwig Stein (1859-1930) and his son Arthur Stein. Valuable to investigate their philosophical background. Their philosophy has a specific character in that both Ludwig and Arthur Stein were pioneers in perceiving the importance of social and educational problems in contemporary culture. In this sense, this collection has a great value for the research of the social and educational philosophies early in the 20th century, containing plenty of literature related to those subjects. Received in fiscal year 1979.

Historical materials related to Suzuki Torao

Historical materials related to Suzuki Torao, handed down in his descendant family
A collection consisted of 764 historical materials (612 books) related to Suzuki Torao, a scholar of Chinese literature who was a professor of Tokyo Higher Normal School and Kyoto Imperial University. Received in September 1939. Suzuki Torao was a pioneer in research on the culture and literature of China (Sinology) in Japan. His followers include Yoshikawa Kojiro and Ogawa Tamaki. Many works of classical Chinese poetry are introduced, including those by Du Fu, as well as poems written by Suzuki Torao himself, under the pen name “Hyouken”. This collection contains many original Chinese poems and poetry manuscripts. Received the Order of Culture in 1961. The collection also includes 15 letters from Kuga Katsunan, a notable Meiji-era journalist, and father-in-law of Suzuki Torao. (44 items were added in May 2014.)

Historical materials related to Suzuki Torao, once possessed by Chozenkan Suzuki family
A collection of an additional 473 items of historical material related to Suzuki Torao received in March 2010. Received in December 2013. This collection contains materials obtained from descendants of the Suzuki family, who operated a Han Chinese language school Chozenkan until 1912 in Aozu-mura, Nishikanbara-gun (presently, Tsubame-shi) in Niigata prefecture, the birthplace of Suzuki Torao. Many of these materials were in private collections, etc. before being donated to university of Tsukuba. The bulk of the collection is correspondence addressed to Suzuki Torao’s father and brother.

Tokyo University of Education Textbooks and Curriculum Library

In 1947, the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers approved the donation of representative textbooks, educational books, and other related materials to the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, and American Education Libraries (AEL) were established at 12 sites throughout Japan. In 1948, the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture added Japanese materials like textbooks and instruction guidelines, and three libraries were combined, AEL, Japan Educational Curriculum Library (ECL), and the Institute for Education Leadership (IFEL), and renamed the Textbooks and Curriculum Library. The Tokyo University of Education Textbooks and Curriculum Library was inherited from the predecessor institution, Tokyo University of Literature and Science, and is a collection of 19,461 volumes (18,738 textbooks and instruction books, 723 subject-related books).

Ninomiya Library

Previously the collection of Ninomiya Hiroyuki, Professor Emeritus at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, a historian of Western history in post-war Japan (approximately 8,500 western books). In addition to specialty fields like the ideological history and institutional history of the era of absolute monarchy in France, the collection also covers main documents about the French Revolution and social history. There are also precious primary historical reference sources, such as collections of Royal Orders and Laws of the 16th to 18th centuries. The collection remains organized in nearly the same way as devised by Professor Ninomiya, making it possible to understand more about the entire Ninomiya historiography.

Haga Library

The collection consisting of 586 Japanese-style books related to the study of Japanese classical literature, formerly owned by University of Tsukuba professor emeritus and former vice president late Dr. Haga Noboru (Japanese history), was donated by his family in 2017. Professor Haga made a wide range of research in history of ethical thought and cultural history among Japanese history study. His major works include “幕末国学の展開“ /Bakumatsu Kokugaku no Tenkai and “幕末国学の研究“ /Bakumatsu Kokugaku no Kenkyu. He also published “芳賀登著作選集” /Haga Noboru Chosaku Senshu, consisting of eight volumes. We have been told that Professor Haga bought books in this collection at antiquarian bookshops after WWII. This collection is unique in containing many manuscripts on Okuni Takamasa. Some of books have Takamasa’s autograph preface and postscript or works not included in his complete collection. Received in April, 2018.

A collection of many precious items, such as論語集注/Rongo Shicchu or Lunyu jizhu, transcribed in Genki era. The main focus is on Chinese culture adopted in Japan, and Japanese editions of Chinese works.

Hidaka Library

A collection assembled from the previous collection of 1,234 books by Higher Normal School Professor Hidaka Masane (education and philosophy). Received in December 1922.Includes a booklet entitled日高文庫設立顛末/Hidaka Bunko Setsuritsu Tenmatsu. Professor Hidaka collected a large number of books while studying in Germany, but died just two years after returning to Japan. It was decided to create an archive of these books in his memory. Donations were collected, and the collection was established. The funds were donated by 447 prominent scholars, including Kano Jigoro, Natsume Kinnosuke (Soseki), and Kitasato Shibasaburo.

Voyage de Humboldt & Bonpland : voyage aux regions equinoxiales du nouveau continent

These are the records of the trip made by Alexander von Humboldt in equatorial South America from 1799 to 1804. It contains descriptions of the topography, politics, and culture of the region, with about half of the records devoted to botany and plant geography. 35 books, received in fiscal year 1984.

Besson collection (The Max Besson Library of "Japonica" collection)

Collected by Max Besson in Paris, consists of about 380 items of publications related to the first encounter of Japan with Europe. Chiefly literatures of early Christianity in Japan, published in 16th and 17th centuries. Rare books of overseas editions of early Christianity in Japan included, such as "Oratio habita a Fara D. Martino", and the trilogy of Collado.

Heffernan Library

Ms. Helen Heffernan held a doctorate in education, and came to Japan from November 1946 to December 1947 to serve as the director of the Civil Information and Educational Section (CIE) responsible for planning and supervising elementary education. Dr. Heffernan was in charge of creating the new social studies textbooks, and requested the cooperation of the former Tokyo University of Education educational research group. The Heffernan Collection includes 25 magazine titles and 221 volumes of books published in America, which were donated to Tokyo University of Education when Dr. Heffernan returned to the USA.

Hozumi Library

A collection of 4,023 items from the former collection of Hozumi Nobushige, who was deeply involved in the process of establishing the modern laws of Japan, and leading authority on legal studies in the Meiji and Taisho eras, and Hozumi Shigeto, Professor at Tokyo Imperial University, and eldest son of Nobushige. Received in March 1952. In the early 1950s this collection was part of the materials related to the Hozumi family that were provided to the academic community by the family themselves. Professor Inada Masatsugu of the Tokyo University of Education Department of Literature purchased the materials with research funds. Materials related to the Hozumi family are archived at University of Tokyo Faculty of Law Library, as well as at University of Tsukuba.

A collection of references related to phonological studies of Chinese characters, consisting of 171 books, such as various韻鏡/Inkyo (Yunjing or “Mirror of Rhymes”) books and Inkyo research books. Received in March 2003.

Miyaki Library

A collection assembled from the previous collection of 5,772 books by Miyaki Yuitsu, the chief priest of Jutokuji temple in Takinogawa, Tokyo. Received in July 1938. Miyaki Yuitsu collected textbooks from schools and temple schools around the time of the Meiji Restoration, while he was a practicing monk. His collection was reported to be a total of more than 20,000 books. On the recommendation of Ototake Iwazo, Professor at Tokyo University of Literature and Science, a portion of this collection (textbooks) was donated to Tokyo University of Literature and Science, which established a textbook collection with the Miyaki collection as the foundation.

Porfirio Diaz Library (The Private Library of Porfirio Diaz, President of Mexico)

A collection of 486 items of related materials added to the former collection of Mexican President Porfirio Diaz (1830 ? 1915), which was purchased as a large collection in 1982. Diaz was a dominant figure in Mexico for a period of 35 years, from 1877 to 1911, both as President and as a kingmaker. In 1911, however, he resigned as President after a revolution and went into exile in France. This collection consists of books and official documents that were left behind in the official residence when Diaz left, supplemented by additional documents as reference material.

A collection of 648 items related to educational reform after the war, assembled and held by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Received in December 2007. These are education-related materials that complement the educational curriculum collection (19,461 volumes including Japanese textbooks and instruction guidelines, representative textbooks and education books from the USA, and the Institute for Education Leadership (IFEL) library) at the University. Includes many conference materials and policy reference materials related to the educational system.

A collection that can also be called the Soviet linguistics study series, carefully selected from personal collections assembled over many years by renowned researchers in Russian and Slavic language studies, based on expert advice. This collection contains fundamental books with a high academic value on the area of Russian and Slavic linguistics, focused mainly on publications of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. The scope of the collection is mainly the Russian language, and also extends to common-use Slavic, Eastern Slavic, Western Slavic, and Southern Slavic, as well as general linguistics. In addition, there are also many Soviet-published research works on the Finno-Ugric languages, Turkic languages, and Caucasian languages. There is also folklore literature related to linguistics. 318 books, received in fiscal year 1987.

Watanabe Ichiro Library

A collection assembled from the previous collection of 398 books by University of Tsukuba Professor Emeritus Watanabe Ichiro (faculty of education, budo). Contains a large amount of valuable historical material related to modern martial arts, and important content for both Japanese studies and studies of martial arts. Received in fiscal year 2012.

IFEL Library

The Institute for Education Leadership (IFEL) workshops were held starting in 1948 in various locations throughout Japan at venues like universities, sponsored by the Civil Information and Educational Section (CIE), with the aim of instilling a new education system in Japan after the war. The IFEL Collection contains teaching materials that were used for the workshop held at Tokyo University of Education in 1952, which were donated when the workshops concluded. Contains 1,931 books covering education in general, published in America in the 1940s and 1950s. (Previous collection of the laboratory of education of Tokyo University of Education) Received in March 2004.
