| Abstract: | 上代以前〈オホ〉は《大》と《多》両方の意味を表し得たが、名詞に冠せられる接頭辞としてもっとも多く用いられ、その場合の意味は《大》に偏っていた。それが、《多》の意を表す他の副詞群の位置を襲う形で副詞形オホクが用いられるようになる。形容詞〈オホシ〉の各活用形成立後は、連用形オホクは《多》の意味に偏り、連体形のうち名詞を連体修飾するオホキは《大》の意味に偏るという語用論的差異が生じていたと推測される。それを受けて、平安時代には、連用形オホクから派生したカリ活用〈オホカリ〉は《多》の意味に限定され、オホキから派生した形容動詞〈オホキナリ〉は《大》の意味に限定された。漢字表記による意味の支えを持たない和文においては、《大》《多》両方の意味を担い得る形容詞〈オホシ〉の本活用に代わって、《多》の意に限定されるカリ活用〈オホカリ〉が愛好された。これが、平安和文において、形容詞のうち〈オホカリ〉だけが終止形･連体形においてもカリ活用が用いられる理由である。 |
